So from The Big Kids and The Little Kids,
(and with this poem we proudly unite),
we'd like to say a very big thank you,
thanks for being our guiding light.
Because mother ruled the halls and the house,
but father decided teaching was not the right card,
so he started his own painting company,
and that's where he worked so very hard.
(NAME) was my 18th birthday present from his room-mate,
on the card, it said "too big to wrap, but I know you'll love him",
and the following day I told my parents I would marry (NAME),
and now I can say, 39 glorious years later, that was no teenage whim.
I remember writing you a poem once before,
if I recall, it was our very first Valentine's date,
I woke up in the middle of the night,
and put pen to paper about my soul mate.
Do you know? You?ve always been there for me,
I?ve never forgotten the eggs and waffles you made me in bed,
along with the very sweet card and the rose,
that gesture meant more than all the words ever said.
You wrote and read a poem at your father?s service,
and you spoke about him missing your wedding day,
and although that one line expresses so much,
it still means there's so much left to say:
Last year I searched so many stores,
in truth, I searched long and hard, high and low,
but I ended up giving you chocolates and a card,
and now there are some things you need to know.
Hello (NAME),
This poem is just for you,
Filled with love and sparkle,
Just like your eyes so blue.
So, you will continue to be my lifelong companion,
and I know at times, that's going to be pretty hard,
but maybe I'll take you skydiving or parasailing,
maybe I'll even pay for a meal with your library card.
Because you'd just been to your grandmother's funeral,
and that is something you can't logically explain,
but maybe she knew what was good for both of us,
and she was looking after you, once again.
You said you would love it if I would write you a poem,
but I know that you're very creative, and I am not at all,
but in anything I have ever done, you've supported me 110%,
and I am just so very glad that you made that initial call.
So just know that we think (NAME) was a hero,
and everyday he's there in our heart,
I don't know how much one poem can do,
but I do know that (hopefully) it's a start.
As you know, October 2002 saw a parting of the waves,
and I must admit, I felt a little battle scarred,
actually, it was a very down time in my life,
only made better by your heartfelt and beautiful card.
For our wonderful parents,
this poem is just for you,
especially commissioned for the occasion,
we've got an awful lot to get through.
Hello, my wonderful Grandparents,
this poem is just for you,
because we're proud of who you are,
and we're proud of what you do.
For our wonderful parents,
this poem is just for you,
especially commissioned for the occasion,
we've got an awful lot to get through.
Skiing trips in (plaace),
the YMCA at(place),
a poem without those memories,
would simply be incomplete.
You had your bar mitzvah in The Patrician,
if I recall, you wore a flash red dinner jacket,
and you used to have your Friday night card games,
but had to stop (because you kept losing a packet).
I would like a poem for my boyfriend,
he is 27, I am 24,
I've had other relationships,
but I've never felt this secure.
For my wonderful parents,
this poem is just for you,
it'll be narrated by (name) and (name),
and we've got an awful lot to get through!
He loved his computer and playing card games,
but often, there happened to be a bit of a glitch,
because he'd get out a wrench and hit the computer,
and start screaming: "You lying, cheating, son-of-a-bitch".
Why do I want this poem written ?
Well, I guess it is because,
I want to say that I love her,
I love everything that she does.
Who's going to root for the other bingo players?
Who's going to offer to buy my card when it's done?
But never mind, despite your sense of direction,
I'm sure you'll have no trouble heading towards the sun.
Even halfway around the world you care for me,
you'll send an e-card or a romantic e-mail,
and I know you have a strong love for me,
and unlike mere words, that love will never fail.
So, we want you to read this poem often,
so you're reminded of just how marvelous you really are,
because if our admiration was a distance,
then it would be further than the furthest star.
A long, long time ago,
I purchased a poem, similar to this,
lame verse after lame verse,
with rhymes like "sealed with a kiss".
I'm sorry I didn't ask you to come to Dad's funeral,
I'm sorry, I was so inconsiderate, I was so unkind,
please forgive me, I obviously wasn't myself,
as you can imagine, I had an awful lot on my mind.
You reached out to me when I felt so alone,
in truth, I felt like the loneliest girl on planet Earth,
and your card couldn't have come at a better time,
you will never really just what it was really worth.
