A poem to a son from his mother on the 1st anniversary of the death of her daughter, saying how important he is and how much she loves him

What is your name : Lee Ann Meiborg

Who do you want the poem written for: my son, Nick

Why do you want the poem written: The first anniversary of the death of my daughter, Amanda, is Oct. 14 and I want to give Nick something special to show how much he means to me and what a great brother he was to her.

What are the key messages you would like to send: That he is a great guy - smart, funny, charming, etc. - that he is very much loved by me and still loved by Amanda. Also, maybe something about wishing him future success in life (he just graduated from Northern IL University and is now going to DePaul for his Master's) How proud I am of him. What a joy he is to be around. (FYI: Nick is 22; Amanda would be 20)

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: As kids, Nick and Amanda could always count on each other as playmates. Riding horses and carving pumpkins at White Pines Ranch. All our road trips - New Mexico, Niagra Falls, out west, the Caribbean cruise. Pets - Hobbes & Asia (cats), Sam (dog) Eating at Baker's Square when Nick accidently made some of his food fall into the aisle - Amanda laughed so hard she was crying. Losing his sister a year ago.

Do you have any other comments or thoughts: Amanda is Nick's only true sibling and she adored him even though she'd never admit it :) Nick seems rather reluctant to talk very much about Amanda

What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): try to go for more happy than sad

Amanda's Love

You truly are such a great guy,
funny, charming and so very smart,
and I just wanted to say "I love you",
but in truth, I just didn't know where to start.

I know October 14th will always be a sad day,
we'll never forget the day when Amanda flew this Earth,
but I wanted to say a few words,
Nick, I wanted you to know what you're truly worth.

You were a great brother to Amanda,
and to me, you've been a simply magnificent son,
and I'm very proud of who you are,
I'm very proud of everything you've ever done.

I wanted you to know that you're special,
and that you mean the very world to me,
you've made my life all the better for living,
you've made my world a better place to be.

Of course, I know you loved Amanda,
but Amanda's love for you will never die,
and I wanted to try and explain that,
or at least, give it my very best try.

You see, love is pure and eternal,
it fills the clouds and the heavens above,
but you also carry it within your heart,
so there, inside, you'll always have Amanda's love.

And that love will warm and protect you,
Amanda's still with you, every step of the way,
and I know she too wanted to thank you,
now, I do have one last thing to say.

I wish you every success in life,
I hope your dreams know no abound,
I just wanted to say I'm proud of you,
you are such a joy to be around.

And I know you and Amanda were playmates,
and we've all shared many a trip on the road,
and I know Amanda never admitted to adoring you,
so these words are overdue and truly owed.

Because I know that she did love you,
she loved you with all her heart and her soul,
and I think that you should be proud of yourself,
as brothers and sons go, you've played the perfect role.

I just wanted to say "I love you",
I guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you, Nick, you're truly wonderful,
and here's to your everlasting success, for evermore.

Comments:

Dear Allen - wow. It took at least six readings of the poem for me not to cry. I love the
poem - it's absolutely wonderful.
