Laughter Always
Hello, our wonderful Kathleen,
these words are just for you,
because I'm proud of who you are,
and I'm very proud of what you do.
I just wanted to say "I love you",
but in truth, I didn't know where to start,
so I thought I'd share a few thoughts,
and give you some words, straight from the heart.
You see, you've become the matriarch of this family,
I'm so glad that you're my sister, my friend,
you accept me for who I am, you never judge,
my gratitude to you simply knows no end.
You've always been there for me,
there for me in my hours of need,
and there have been times when I've needed a friend,
and for the record, you have been a true friend indeed.
I'm so proud of your accomplishments,
in truth, I'm proud of everything you've ever done,
your love has been my light, my inspiration,
in every way, you've been my morning sun.
Teacher, principal, administrator,
there's been so many lessons that you've taught,
and I know that we're all so very grateful,
we're very thankful for your unconditional support.
You married a man with three children,
and of course, you already had one of your own,
you've made all of their lives nicer,
I know they too are thankful for the love that you've shown.
And we've shared so many wonderful times,
in truth, too many to individually list,
just know that everyone is so precious,
in truth, there's not one that I would have missed.
Do you have pigeon blood in your veins?
Because to be honest, I can't really tell,
but as an ex Spelling Bee champion,
this is probably something you should learn how to spell.
But maybe you can get water out of a camel?
but why do we laugh so much when we're together?
Do you have any extra coffee beans for a trail?
Why are you girls laughing at the weather?
What did Daddy's arms and legs really look like?
It's only a vegetable, some would say,
and I guess there's many more questions,
OK God, what are we doing today?
Remember the toilets of Italy and Seattle?
or Colorado, where we were filled with hot air?
or sadly, the MD Anderson Cancer Institute,
you had to learn patience while you were there.
Granny's switches and Grandpa called us Injuins,
but his oyster crackers would make us smile,
Grandpa Stevenson would tie our bows,
and he'd drive us to the bus stop just once in a while.
And even during the sad times we try and laugh,
and I think that's what has got us through the years,
and we've shared so much, so much to look at,
but there's always been laughter (and far fewer tears).
I just wanted to say Happy 60th Birthday,
I guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you Kathleen, you're truly wonderful,
and here's to at least another 60 more. |
