Ever and Ever
Ladies and gentlemen,
can I have your attention please?
Because every now and then in life,
there's opportunity you should seize.
And that moment is upon us,
after all, it is Alan's 60th birth day,
and I've got some thoughts on my mind,
yes, I do have some heartfelt words to say.
Firstly, I'd like to begin by looking skywards,
and thanking those in the heavens above,
because I know I've been blessed to have shared you,
I know that I've been blessed with your love.
Now all this, started exactly 60 years ago,
well, sixty years and nine months to be precise,
and that's when this man's life story started out,
and what a story! (And didn't he turn out so very nice?)
So, there he was, April 20, 1945, in Brooklyn,
and the hospital happily resounded to: "It's a boy!",
truly, he was his parent's dreams personified,
in every way, he was their pride and joy.
Actually, he took his time in arriving,
because he was last in the line of eight,
but I'm so glad that he could make it,
I couldn't imagine life without my soul-mate.
Of course, neither could his sons and daughters (in law),
we're all very grateful for the love that he's shown,
and let's not forget our three wonderful grandsons,
because look how your mighty oak has grown!
Now it's been said that Alan likes his food,
and if it was an Olympic sport, he'd win the 'eat,
but of all the husbands on this planet,
I know I'm lucky (because mine just can't be beat).
Now, Alan's a lawyer and loves to fish,
but I promise, there's not a shark joke in sight,
because I just wanted to thank him for being Alan,
his love for me has burned so consistently bright.
Ten years ago, I was very sick in hospital,
and truly, it was a very difficult and horrible time,
but Alan slept in the hospital with me every night,
and never has more reason been in any rhyme.
Because he's always been so very compassionate,
he's like a good chocolate, soft but hard on the outside,
and I know I couldn't have chosen a finer husband,
I know I couldn't - even if I'd tried.
Actually, he said he'd rather have a boat than this party,
but I know that's not true, as he's such a sensitive soul,
and I just wanted to say: "Alan, I love you",
you are the one that makes me completely whole.
He's always said that he didn't want a million acquaintances,
so if you're here today, you're our very good friends,
and I know that you're all very important to Alan,
now just a few more things (before these lines have their ends).
Alan was my 18th birthday present from his room-mate,
on the card, it said "too big to wrap, but I know you'll love him",
and the following day I told my parents I would marry Alan,
and now I can say, 39 glorious years later, that was no teenage whim.
Actually, on our first date, his reputation preceded him,
so he said: "Don't compliment yourself" (as I jumped out of the car),
but now Alan, I think it's time for me to compliment you,
because I've never said just how wonderful you really are.
You're a terrific husband, Dad and son,
and our 39 years together have simply been a blast,
and the love that we share has blossomed,
and I've got a feeling that fruit is going to last.
Because what we have is so very special,
and we're just so happy when we're together,
and I know our love will continue rolling on,
in fact, it will last forever and ever and ever.
And I just wanted to say Happy 60th Birthday,
I guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you, Alan, you're truly wonderful,
and here's to our everlasting love, for evermore. |
