Pure Wedded Bliss

Ladies and gentlemen,
can I have your attention please?
Because every now and then in life,
there's opportunity you should seize.

And that moment is upon us,
after all, 50 years, Mom and Dad were wed,
and we've got some thoughts on our mind,
yes, there's some heartfelt words that need to be said.

Firstly, I think we'll begin by looking skywards,
and thanking those in the heavens above,
because we know we've been blessed to have shared you,
we know that we've been blessed with your love.

Actually, Mom was dating someone else,
that was when Dad first asked her out,
so she promptly broke her date,
and found out what true love is all about.

And as they say, and as you know,
time went on and we all became part of history,
because five daughters followed, no son,
poor old Dad, he never had any privacy.

Roxanne, Julie, Brenda, Melonie and Ronda.
My! Look how your mighty oak has grown,
and we'd all like to thank you for your kindness,
we're very grateful for all the love that you've shown.

Father was All State in basketball, baseball and football,
and he was asked to try out for the Twins,
actually, he said no, in those days there was no money,
and the love of sport wouldn't pay for all of his "sins"!

Mother was Fergus Falls homecoming queen,
and they met in college in Moorehead State,
they married and moved to Chulavista, California,
two young lovers blown along by the winds of fate.

Mother taught Elementary while Father went to San Diego,
and instead of hunting, he went to sea and got rather ill,
so they moved back to Fargo, North Dakota,
and father resumed his love of hunting (and the kill).

Father graduated from Moorehead with a teaching degree,
and in '64, they moved to Minnesota to raise the five,
and this they've done so very splendidly,
and it's because of them, we continue to thrive!

Mother was always the strict one
and our father could never say no!
When we didn't get our own way,
we would tell our father and he would let us go!

Actually, we were the cause of much bickering,
but my mother usually gave up in the end,
we were good manipulators when needed,
and when in need, Dad was always our friend.

Because mother ruled the halls and the house,
but father decided teaching was not the right card,
so he started his own painting company,
and that's where he worked so very hard.

13 hours a day and never a vacation!
But thankfully, that didn't last for evermore,
because eventually they bought a house in Texas,
no more seasickness because father can now fish on shore!

And after fifty years, they have 5 wonderful son-in-laws,
Thomas, Dave, David, Randall and Laine all say "Hi!",
and we can't possibly name all of the grandchildren,
oh, can't we? Well, we'll give it our very best try;

Kori, Kippling, Jeramie, Crystal, Jonathon, Michael, Cassie,
Justine, Girard, Taylor, Gabe, Alaina, Nicholous and Grant,
and let's not forget Anna, Jayden and Grace,
(because in this family, there's no such word as can't).

And on a much sadder and solemner note,
those here today are not the only ones to have soared,
because Ethan David Higgins is alive in us all,
and we know he's safe in the house of The Lord.

Our parents have always loved each other very much
they've stuck it out through thick and thin, but always together,
and they share a love that is simply eternal,
a love that's destined to last forever and ever.

We are so grateful to have you as our parents,
and we do love you with all our hearts and soul,
for you are the ones that have made us complete,
you are the ones that make this family completely whole.

Thank you mom and thank you Dad,
we'd like to thank you for everything that you've taught,
you've always given us great advice and encouragement
and we're very grateful for your unconditional support.

Because we've never said thank you properly before now,
we've never told you just how wonderful you really are,
but if our love for you were a distance,
then it would be further than the furthest star.

And we'd like to say Happy Fiftieth Anniversary,
but these lines can all be summed up just like this,
because your marriage has been truly exemplary,
so, congratulations on 50 years of pure wedded bliss!
