A poem for a good friend tragically killed in a motorcycle accident
In memory of a very good friend of mine, David Butterworth, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on July 17th, 2003.
Mere Mortal Words
Busy doing something else,
and then a phone call out of the blue,
a day left in shattered pieces,
as all my thoughts turn to you.
I'm glad that you didn't suffer,
that's some consolation I suppose,
and if you could have chosen the path to exit,
I think that's the way you would have chose.
Full throttle, wind in your face,
a summer breeze and a country road,
bright flowers in the hedgerows,
and the smell of grass freshly mowed.
And now you've gone onto the next stage,
where I'm sure you'll get to play your part,
whilst us mere mortals have to just sit and wonder:
What happens to a fine, magnificent and noble heart?
I think you had an honesty which was refreshing,
and a love of the simple things in life,
your bike, a beer, a paper, even a snooze,
but most of all, you loved your family, your son and your wife.
Now you've left a gap that's hard to fill,
and forever, there'll be an empty space,
and we'll have to pass our time just wondering,
while you've already moved onto that other place.
And life is what happens while you're making other plans,
and we all get too busy, forget what matters the most,
but I'm glad that you were a friend of mine,
that is something I will always proudly boast.
And I'm sorry we hadn't spoke in a while,
now, we'll have to leave that talk for another day,
just know that I'm proud to have known you,
and immortally, that's the way it will always stay. |
