50th Wedding Anniversary poem to be read by grandchildren at the party of this couple who spent most of their time travelling, preaching and singing in Baptist churches

Who do you want the poem written for: Parents/grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary
Why do you want the poem written: I would like two of my children (boy-11, girl-9) to read or recite the poem at the anniversary celebration....as if the poem were written from their perspective
What are the key messages you would like to send: Love, appreciation, faithfulness to the Lord (they travel nearly full-time preaching & singing in baptist churches across the U.S.), grandpa (aka: PAPPY) always uses his funny puppet/ventriliquist (sp?) voices with his 14 grandchildren. Grandma (aka: MAMAW) sings, plays the piano, always lovingly corrects people's posture (keep your shoulders back, sit up straight...) always want little ladies to look and act like little ladies. Pappy love to hunt every chance he gets and fishes too. A great example of committment to convictions and dedication to each others goals and dreams.
Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: We can't seem to have a large family function without Pappy or Mamaw in the emergency room with stiches in her hand from a kitchen knife or Pappy playing basketball with the grandkids and falling, bumping his head causing a concussion. They have a huge porch to play on during rainy days and a big tire swing. A mowing tractor that Pappy drives to pull kids in the wagon.

Like It's Butter
Ladies and gentlemen,
can we have your attention please?
Because every now and then in life,
there's opportunity you should seize.
And that moment is upon us,
because, 50 years ago, two special people were wed,
and we've got a few thoughts on our minds,
yes, there's some heartfelt words that need to be said.
On behalf of everyone, we'd like to say "thank you",
we'd like to thank you for your undying support,
we're very grateful for all your love and guidance,
and for every lesson that you've taught.
The strength you display is simply amazing,
and there's many, many obstacles that you're overcome,
and we know we've been blessed to have you as parents and grandparents,
thanks Pappy, Dad and thank you Mamaw, Mom.
The love that you share is precious,
you're selfless, and we've felt the warmth of your love,
and I think we should thank our lucky stars,
in truth, I think we should thank the heavens above.
Because your faith has never, ever wavered,
you have a such a belief in the strength of The Lord,
and because of the love you have for us,
you've given us your wings and we've soared.
You spread joy like it's butter,
you spread it far and all around,
and you tread the path of the righteous,
your mere footsteps create hallowed ground.
Because you do so much for others,
you've done so very much for him, her and me,
and Pappy's ventriloquist voice is very special,
it's made all our worlds a better place to be.
Grandma sings and plays the piano,
(keep your shoulders back, sit up straight),
little ladies must look and act like little ladies,
(these are things we've heard her state).
I think we broke you in quite well,
but we went through the valleys to end up on top,
and our gratitude to you is simply enormous,
you kept on loving us and didn't know how to stop.
You are such special people,
there, our feelings are no longer hid,
I only wish I had half your strength and courage,
because you've endured where others never did.
Pappy is the fisherman, Mum lovingly steers us,
and your love keeps our world together,
and yours is a story of gritty determination,
a love story, one that'll last forever and ever.
You've both overcome my parent's teenage years,
but that has never weakened your spirit,
you both have such an attitude towards life,
"let's live it" and importantly "let's be in it".
So Pappy plays basketball with the grandkids,
while Mamaw has accidents with the knife,
it doesn't matter you both end up with stitches,
you're always get the very best out of life.
And may you keep spreading your joy around,
because you're a mighty influence on us all,
because of you, we all walk taller,
in fact, we all feel like we're about ten feet tall.
And we just wanted to say Happy 50th Anniversary,
that's really what these words are for,
here's to you, Mamaw and Pappy, Mom and Dad, you're wonderful,
and here's to at least another fifty more. |
