80th Birthday gift to Grandmother

What is your name : Delia Ann Roux

Who do you want the poem written for: My Grandmother, Anna (Ann) Roux

Why do you want the poem written: Because it's her 80th birthday on the 23rd Jan 2005 and we will be honoring her with a party. She is the most special person in my life. There are so many things I would like to say to her to make her feel wonderful but am having difficulty in choosing the right thing to say or simlpy getting it out!

What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): something positive and happy but .... a tear jerker!

What are the key messages you would like to send: We have a special, spiritual connection. She puts the grand in Grandmother and has been my confidante'. We are very close and I couldn't imagine my world without her. No matter how busy I get in my daily dealings, I always remember how special she is and how much she means to me. I say a prayer for her every night and ask God to keep her safe.

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable
moments that you would like to share: I am her first grandchild. She always tells me I'm her favourite. She actually tells everyone I introduce her to, that "I'm her first"!And then goes into detail about happenings as a child...My Granny used to take me shopping as a child all the time and I used to get anything I asked for. She once bought me a very purple (she called it Mauve) dress when I was about 5 years old. I loved that dress so much and wanted to wear it everyday. My mother was at her wits end most of the time with me, as I had a very strong nature with my own ideas. The dress even had a stain on the front below the chin, but I insisted on wearing it, especially for my annual school photo session! Gran used to get into trouble a lot by Mom & Dad because she used to give in to my every wish and just couldn't say "No" to her favourite person. I could always talk to my Gran and she was always there for me. She is a true South African and the best cook I have ever come across. She always made my favourite of everything, no matter what time of the day. And her short bread biscuits were to die for! ... Not to mention her macaroni & cheese and sweet potato. One thing I will always remember, every Christmas she would make Mock Crayfish as a starter for Christmas lunch. (or I wouldn't let her come without it) It was the best crayfish I have ever tasted and she always made a large extra portion for me to take home.

Do you have any other comments or thoughts: She is in her 59th year of marriage to Michael (Mick). She has two sons (my father being the younger one) and six grandchildren. She was a very beautiful bride and the many pictures I have of her as a young woman, are something wonderful. She was also a dancer in her day. (ballroom) and won many competions.

Beautiful Dancer

Ladies and gentlemen,
can I have your attention please?
Because every now and then in life,
there's opportunity you should seize.

And that moment is upon us,
after all, 80 years ago, it was Anna's birth day,
and I've got some thoughts on my mind,
yes, I do have some heartfelt words to say:

Hello, Anna, my wonderful grandmother,
these words are just for you,
because I'm proud of who you are,
and I'm very proud of what you do.

And I just wanted to say "I love you",
but in truth, I didn't know where to start,
so I thought I'd share a few feelings,
and give you some words, straight from the heart.

Firstly, I'd like to begin by looking skywards,
and thanking those in the heavens above,
because I know I've been blessed to have shared you,
I know that I've been blessed with your love.

You are the most special person in my life,
and I can say that without a shadow of a doubt,
you've taught me so much over the years,
you've certainly taught me what true love is all about.

And this is actually quite difficult for me,
because I've got so many things on my mind,
how on Earth do describe what's in your heart?
How you describe someone who's so wonderful and kind?

You see, we have this special, spiritual connection,
truly, you put the grand in Grandmother
and at crucial times, you've been my confidant,
you hold a special place here, like no other.

I couldn't imagine my world without you,
and you've certainly made that world a great place to be,
and no matter how busy I get in my daily dealings,
I always remember just how much you really mean to me.

I say a solemn prayer for you every night,
and I ask God to keep you safe and far from harms,
because I know just how truly special you are,
I know how loved I feel when you hold me in your arms.

I'm proud to be your "favourite" first grandchild,
and that's what you tell everyone I know,
you then go into detail what I did as a child,
I guess you've always been proud watching me grow.

I remember when you used to take me shopping,
and I used to get anything that my little heart desired,
you once bought me a very purple (you called it Mauve) dress,
I was about 5 years old (and of that dress, I never grew tired).

I loved that dress so much I wanted to wear it everyday,
even if it had a stain on it just below the chin,
I had a very strong nature with my own ideas,
my mother was exasperated, because she knew I'd win.

So I kept on insisting that I would wear it,
especially for my annual school photo shoot,
Gran, you used to get into trouble a lot by Mom & Dad
because you were very generous with your hard earned loot.

In fact, you used to give in to my every wish
and to her favourite person, you just couldn't say "No",
but I also know that if I needed someone to talk to,
well, I knew exactly where I should go.

Because I could always talk to my Gran, open and honestly,
she is a true South African and the best cook I have ever known,
any hour of the day, she always made my favourite of everything,
I'm very grateful for all the love that she's shown.

And her short bread biscuits were simply to die for,
not to mention her sweet potato and macaroni & cheese,
and I'll never forget the Christmas Mock Crayfish,
the best ever. (Would you like some more? Yes, please!)

Now you're in your 59th year of marriage to Mick,
and together, you've worked at your family dream,
and now, with two sons and six grandchildren later,
we're very grateful you're such a wonderful team.

I have many wonderful pictures of you as a young woman,
and from them, I know that you were a very beautiful bride
but I just know I couldn't have chosen a finer grandmother,
I know I couldn't - even if I'd tried.

I also know that you were a dancer in your day,
well, you've danced so beautifully into all of our hearts,
and we just wanted to thank you for being you,
you've given us all the very best of starts.

And maybe we've never really told you,
maybe we've never said just how wonderful you are,
but if our collective love for you were a distance,
then it would be further than the furthest star.

And I also wanted to Happy 80th Birthday,
I guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you, Anna, grandmother, you're truly wonderful,
and here's to at least another eighty more!
