Poem to a Wife of 20 years, they have been going through a rough patch and he says he loves her and would be lost without her
What is your name : Howard Zack
Who do you want the poem written for: Kathy, my wife of 20 years. She is 54, I'm 56.
Why do you want the poem written: Because I need a way of expressing my deepest sentiments which don't surface very often and are difficult to express verbally. Also because we have been having a rough time recently in our relationship and I want to be clear and unconditional about my devotion, love and need for her.
What are the key messages you would like to send: How much I value our relationship. How much I need her love and support to make me complete. That I can't imagine my future without her in it. That I am happy when she is happy and sad when she is not. That we have journeyed so far in 20 years, living through challenges, raising Alison (my daughter from my first marriage), and Ben (our 18-year old college bound son). That we have built so much together--home, family, friends. How supportive she has been for my career, including relocation from New York City to Minnesota.
Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: She came to Minnesota kicking and screaming in July of 1997, as part of my job relocation. She claims that she didn't even know where Minnesota was! Still doesn't know what states surround us! She created our home, quickly got connected to the community, created a large circle of close friends for us and engineered a great life for us. Except for missing New York and needing to go back and visit pretty regularly, we are now at home in Minnesota. We got a dog when we moved to Minnesota, against her will. Curly (our dog) follows her around the house all day and considers her the "alpha" dog. They have a comical relationship, kind of a love/hate thing. We are very prideful of our son Ben who has developed to be a fine young man with a warm personality, good sense of humor and great sense of family. I give Kathy credit for working at a relationship and being a friend to Alison, age 26 (from my first marriage). A challenging situation at best.
Do you have any other comments or thoughts: I love her youthful personality, her sense of humor, her good looks. I like it that she takes care of her health and fitness so we can be healthy together as we grow older together. How important it is for me to know that she will be part of my life now and into the future.
What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): I want the poem to go deep with sincerity. I want her to know how heartfelt these sentiments are. I want her to cry because she feels it in her heart.

To You
Hello, my wonderful Kathy,
these words are just for you,
because I'm proud of who you are,
and I'm very proud of what you do.
And I just wanted to say that I love you,
but I just didn't know where to start,
so I thought I'd share a few thoughts and feelings,
and give you some words, straight from the heart.
Now, I know I struggle to express my deepest sentiments,
(I guess that can sometimes leave you feeling perturbed),
but they sit at the bottom of a deep, dark ocean,
and for the most part, I leave them undisturbed.
But that doesn't mean I don't have those feelings,
it doesn't mean that I do not love you so,
so now is the time for me to dredge the bottom,
and tell you some things that you should already know.
I know we've been having a rough time recently,
but life is never a rose filled dream,
but I think we simply belong together,
because we do make a magnificent team.
I need you, I'm totally devoted to you,
and to you, I give you my unconditional love,
because I know I've been blessed to have met you,
I know that I've been blessed by the heavens above.
I really do value our relationship,
I need your love and support to make me complete,
I can't imagine my future without you,
it's a future that I never, ever want to meet.
I'm so happy when you're happy,
so naturally, I'm sad when you're sad,
we've journeyed so far in our 20 years,
in truth, the best years that I've ever had.
You've been so supportive throughout my career,
I even moved you out of New York State,
and together we've built a home in Minnesota,
blown by those corporate winds of fate.
But you rapidly created our loving home,
and quickly connected to the community,
and apart from the regular visits back to New York,
Minnesota is very much our place to be.
Curly follows you around the house all day,
and I know you have this love-hate kind of thing,
but you bring us all so much joy and happiness,
and there's so many other riches that you bring.
I give you so much credit for becoming Alison's friend,
not the easiest situation at the best of times,
but you managed to conquer that mountain,
and I know it was one of the tougher climbs.
Ben is such a fine young man,
truly, he is our dreams personified,
and I know he couldn't have picked a finer mother,
I know he couldn't - even if he'd tried.
I love your youthful personality,
your sense of humor, your good looks,
I like it that you take care of your health and fitness,
I like it that you follow those exercise books.
Because it's important that you're in my life,
that you're in it now, tomorrow and forever,
because I know our journey isn't over,
and it's one that we need to complete together.
We've raised Alison and Ben so wonderfully,
we've built so much; home, family and friends,
and ours is a journey with eternal longevity,
it'll continue long after our earthbound story ends.
And I just wanted to say "I love you",
I guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you, Kathy, you're wonderful,
and here's to our everlasting love, for evermore. |
